1896年4月6日，一曲优美庄严的古典管弦乐曲响起在第一届奥运会开幕典礼上，这支乐曲就是由希腊人塞玛拉斯作曲，派勒玛作词，当时被人们称为“奥林匹克圣歌”的曲子。奥运会1950年以后，有人建议另作新曲，但几经尝试，都不如原有的好。于是，1958年国际奥委会在东京召开会议时，确认第一届演奏的管弦乐为永久的“奥林匹克会歌”。
